heated debate in Germany. The German language is known for both its expressiveness and for forming long composite words. As the nation suffered through the coronavirus crisis, would any other language have come up with \u201cMindestabstandsregelungen\u201d (minimum-distance regulations) for the \u201cAnderthalbmetergesellschaft\u201d (one-and-a-half-meter society)? Yet despite this linguistic flexibility, people in Germany are having a hard time agreeing on how to express gender neutrality.<\/p>\n<p>German, like many other languages, genders words. Pupils are taught by a male <em>Lehrer<\/em> or a female <em>Lehrerin<\/em>; at a hospital, you might be treated by a male <em>Arzt<\/em> or a female <em>\u00c4rztin<\/em>. When speaking in more general terms, however, the masculine plural form of the noun is used to address everyone: a call for all <em>B\u00fcrger<\/em> \u2013 (male) citizens \u2013 to follow coronavirus rules is of course also meant to apply to Germany\u2019s <em>B\u00fcrgerinnen<\/em>. This plural form,\u00a0known as the generic masculine,\u00a0has set off an increasingly polarised <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/debate-over-gender-inclusive-neutral-language-divides-germany\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">debate<\/a> that has involved courts, dictionary publishers and the government.<\/p>\n<p>Some of <a href=\"https:\/\/englishbusiness.de\/references\/\">EnglishBusiness\u2019s clients<\/a>, naturally aware of the controversy swirling around the subject, have expressed interest in making sure their English-language documents are gender-inclusive.<\/p>\n<h2>Translating Gendered Into Gender-Inclusive Language<\/h2>\n<p>Our solution: the <a href=\"https:\/\/englishbusiness.de\/translation\/\">translators and editors<\/a> at EnglishBusiness now use the singular \u201cthey\u201d in English. Our German clients frequently insert a note in their (German) texts saying that, while they use the masculine form for clarity, all genders are meant. Our approach is to translate the segment that contains this addendum and to then add a comment for the client noting the difference in the languages. This note says that the singular \u201cthey\u201d has been used, and that it is unnecessary to include a comment regarding the masculine form in the final published English document.<\/p>\n<h2>What is This Singular \u201cThey\u201d, Anyway?<\/h2>\n<p>The Associated Press Stylebook (AP), a must-have reference for writers, editors, students and professionals, provides guidelines for spelling, language, punctuation, usage and style. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apstylebook.com\/ap_stylebook\/gender-neutral-language\">AP Stylebook<\/a> has a lot to say about gender-neutral language. Much of it is not necessarily useful when you\u2019re writing business reports, but it\u2019s a good resource to have on hand so you can make sure your written communication is balanced.<\/p>\n<h2>Here\u2019s what the AP says about the singular \u201cthey\u201d:<\/h2>\n<p><strong><em>They, them, their<\/em> \u2013 <\/strong>In most cases, a plural pronoun should agree in number with the antecedent: <em>The children love the books their uncle gave them. They\/them\/their <\/em>is acceptable in limited cases as a singular and\/or gender-neutral pronoun when alternative wording is overly awkward or clumsy. However, <strong>rewording usually is possible and always is preferable <\/strong>(emphasis ours). Clarity is a top priority; gender-neutral use of a singular <em>they<\/em> is unfamiliar to many readers.<\/p>\n<p>As we have emphasised above, the best solution in our opinion is to reword phrases so you can avoid using the masculine pronouns \u201che\u201d or \u201chis\u201d to refer to all people. A good reference with ideas for the singular \u201cthey\u201d and for rewording is provided by the Canadian Government\u2019s Department of Justice, which you can find <a href=\"https:\/\/canada.justice.gc.ca\/eng\/rp-pr\/csj-sjc\/legis-redact\/legistics\/p1p15.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><br \/>\n\n<style While there is increasing social acceptance of the singular \u201cthey\u201d, a court has not yet ruled on its interpretation in contracts.\u00a0 Similarly, the use of the plural \u201cthey\u201d in legal documents can be misleading. For instance, an employment offer is usually not made to a number of people but to one individual. Creativity and rewording of the clause are often necessary. The National Law Review has a useful article on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.natlawreview.com\/article\/how-to-write-gender-neutral-contracts\">How to Write Gender-Neutral Contracts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Rewording for Success<\/h2>\n<p>Sometimes things can get a little awkward and silly when people try their best to come up with non-gendered language.
